The Film 'Together' Has Debuted on Streaming, and It Could Strengthen or Shatter Your Partnership.

Consider this a dare for partners in committed relationships who enjoy horror films: Sit down with your loved one and watch Together. This 2025 indie hit just made its streaming debut on the Hulu service. Outwardly, it might appear like conventional biological terror, but beneath Together lies a profound meditation about how we choose to love each other.

An Introductory Film Investigating The Nuances of Love

Together is the debut feature-length film for director Michael Shanks. It showcases actors Alison Brie and Dave Franco as a couple named Tim and Millie, a pair who are not married that have stayed together for over ten years. United in marriage in real life in 2017, the actors contribute a particular energy to their portrayals, skillfully embodying both the strengths and weaknesses of a committed partnership.

The plot starts when the couple move from the big city to the country for professional reasons. A somewhat stereotypical narrative setup, admittedly, but that’s largely where the cliches end. Together becomes as much a deep dive into the psyche of the pair’s relationship as it is a body horror flick.

A Supernatural Catalyst

While hiking near their country house, a violent storm occurs, and the two fall into an subterranean cavern. After a night spent there and eventually escaping, a supernatural entity takes hold of the pair. This force creates a paranormal intimacy between them that goes well past simple connection.

The complete narrative is a gradually intensifying horror experience, blending moments of dreamlike terrors, disturbing (but never too gross) biological grotesqueries, and surprisingly comedic interactions (sometimes in the middle of something disturbing). The director orchestrates these parts seamlessly and presents them in a gradually swelling atmosphere of fear.

Nuanced Portrayals

A large part of Together is only the two lead actors, and they skillfully illustrate countless layers to the partnership at the film's core. Millie’s confidence and emotional bond is deteriorating due to a lack of intimacy. Her subconscious resentment of Tim for his unwillingness to pursue anything but his floundering music career gradually emerges.

Conversely, Tim experiences isolation and isolated by Millie, who’s the impetus they’ve relocated rural and far away from his support system. He dreads the notion of completely losing his sense of self in another person. This fear is amplified by the reality he can’t drive and is dependent on Millie for mobility.

The film's most intelligent aspect is that he avoids making Tim or Millie the definite antagonist.

Tim and Millie confront the type of challenges that arise in most partnerships over a long period. Deep down, they continue to care for one another. They find humor with each other, offer support, and share intimately at times. But beneath it all, there’s an inescapable undercurrent of doubt about their bond.

Allegory and Meaning

While the paranormal elements in Together act as a metaphor for these concerns of excessive reliance and totally devoting oneself to another person, the allegory never feels clumsy or self-important. Instead, these visceral horror elements offer a ideal counterpart to the relationship narrative. Both the supernatural and the personal enhance each other symbiotically.

A Debated Finale

Together’s conclusion, which remains unspoiled, has created disagreement on the movie's final takeaway about unhealthy partnerships. Accounts suggest that unattached audience members have seen the movie as a compelling reason for avoiding commitment. Conversely, some couples who were in conflict found that the film ended up guiding them to resolve their issues.

Whether you’re single or coupled up, your own response could act as a great barometer of how you think about commitment. Will the conclusion sow anxiety and horror, or a uplifting feeling of optimism? Will you identify in either protagonist and feel frustration, or simply glance toward your significant other and utter, “I’d do that for you”?

No matter your reaction, Together is an exploration you can undertake today.

Together is currently playing on Hulu as of this moment.
